How to Choose Your Altas Smith Machine

A Smith machine guides the bar along a stable path and makes training solo much easier. A few key differences then help you pick the station that best matches how you like to train.

First decision

Is a Smith machine the right fit for how you train?

Choose the guided bar path of a Smith machine

The bar travels on rails and stays aligned through squats, presses and many other movements. Built-in safety stops make solo training easier and let you lock in your range of motion.

  • Stable bar path
  • Easy-to-reach safety stops
  • Quick repositioning between sets

Choose the freedom of a cage or rack

A free-standing Olympic bar lets you choose your own bar path. This setup is ideal for training built around free weights and traditional strength movements.

  • Completely free bar path
  • Focus on free-weight training
  • Setup you can build on over time

Three differences that truly shape your choice

Start with how the bar feels, then decide where the pulleys go and the level of equipment that will make your workouts more complete.

1. Counterbalanced bar or full weight?

Counterbalanced bar

A counterweight system reduces the felt weight at the start. This setup makes the bar easier to handle, works well with lighter loads and lets people of different strength levels use the station.

Non-counterbalanced bar

The bar's own weight contributes more to the resistance from the very first inch of the movement. This feel suits users who are already comfortable with guided exercises.

Key point: counterbalancing mainly affects the starting weight and how easy the bar is to handle.

2. Smith and rack, or a station with pulleys?

Smith machine and rack

This setup keeps training focused on squats, presses, lunges, free weights and strength movements.

Smith machine with pulleys

The pulleys add pulldowns, extensions, arm, back and shoulder exercises, plus a wide range of functional movements.

Key point: pulleys turn a Smith machine into a far more complete training station.

3. How do you want to round out the station?

Plate-loaded pulleys

Olympic plates provide the resistance. This option is ideal for anyone who already owns weights or builds their training around loaded plates.

Built-in weight stacks

A pin selects the resistance and makes quick changes easy between exercises and users.

Ratio and accessories

A 1:1 ratio delivers direct resistance. A 2:1 ratio gives a smoother, longer cable stroke. Press arms, leg stations and accessories then open up even more possibilities.

Key point: choose the features you'll genuinely want to use on a regular basis.

Three benchmark models to understand the lineup

These three stations show different ways of combining a guided bar, pulleys and extra functions.

An option for spaces that need to serve another purpose

Foldable models let you fold up the front of the station after your workout. This feature really pays off when the space you reclaim is actually used between training sessions. In a permanent gym, keeping the station open makes it ready to use at any time.

Compare the open and folded dimensions, along with the steps needed to set up the station, before you decide.
